On Thursday night New Mexico Military improved to 3-1 in district play with a 3-2 win over Ruidoso High School at the Godfrey Athletic Center. With back-to-back wins, the Lady Colts moved to 11-9 overall. With the loss, Ruidoso dipped to a 12-9 overall record with a 3-1 mark in district play.
SET 1
In the first set the Lady Colts established some early rhythm as they took a quick 3-1 lead to open the match. With the help of a few attacking errors and service errors, NMMI increased their advantage. In the first set, Ana Maria Caetano Silva came up with a few kills that the Ruidoso defenders had no chance against.
Defensively, the Lady Colts anchored behind Ezabelle Gomez as she dug out almost every Ruidoso attack. NMMI held on to win the first set after Ruidoso kept sneaking back into the match, but the Lady Colts would take the first set 25-23.
SET 2
With momentum from the first set, NMMI was in the driver’s seat the entire second set. Kaytlyn Lackey and Sofia Barreras got in on the action as they each tallied a pair of kills to help grow the NMMI lead.
NMMI forced an early timeout after going up by 10 points. Following the timeout the Lady Colts secured the second set easily 25-14 to take a 2-0 set lead.
SET 3 / SET 4
After being up 2-0, NMMI lost some momentum. Ruidoso would fight for every point as they secured the third set 27-25 to extend the match.
In the fourth set, Ruidoso used their momentum to blast out to a 20-14 lead. Following an NMMI timeout, the Warriors would close out the set on a 5-5 run as they tied the match 2-2 with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.
SET 5
NMMI took a quick 3-1 lead as Siany Mcghan-Barthel tallied a kill to set the tone of the final set. Ezabelle Gomez added in a service ace to give the Lady Colts a 5-2 advantage. However, Ruidoso did not shy away as they tied the set at 6-6.
With a great response, NMMI earned the next four points to take a 10-6 lead – which forced a Ruidoso timeout. After a 4-4 run, the Lady Colts forced another timeout as they held a 14-10 lead. Ruidoso would fight back, but the Lady Colts would secure the final set 15-12.
