On Tuesday night New Mexico Military Institute improved to 5-1 on the year with a 37-23 win over Hondo Valley. With the loss, Hondo Valley dips to 3-7 on the season. Tuesday night was the second matchup between the two as the Lady Colts came out on top in both matchups.
The first eight minutes of the game was all defense by both sides. The Lady Colts allowed just one basket by the Eagles in the opening period, which was a three made by Makailah Gonzales. For NMMI, both Neveah Clark and Sofia Barreras both scored a layup to give the Colts a 4-3 lead after the first quarter.
With a slight lead, the Colts opened the scoring with a three by Ezebelle Gomez and Kaytlyn Lackey. Neveah Clark doubled her point tally as she scored four in the quarter to help the Colts to a 15-8 advantage heading into halftime. The defensive theme stayed true as NMMI only allowed Hondo Valley to score five points in the second quarter.
Up seven, NMMI found some offensive rhythm as they tallied 11 points in the third period. Leslie Piedra-Chavez scored five points with a three pointer and a fast break layup. Neveah Clark stayed consistent as she scored another four points in the third to give NMMI a 26-14 lead heading into the final period. Similarly to the second quarter, Hondo Valley was held to just six points in the third period.
In the final quarter, NMMI outscored Hondo Valley 11-9. Once again Neveah Clark scored four points in the final period. The final eight minutes were a slight change for Hondo Valley as they had three different scorers in a quarter for the first time all game. However, the Colts would secure the 37-23 win.
Head Coach Lawrence Hall on the win, “Early in the first half we looked out of shape, coming off break and trying to get our wind back. We started making mistakes and couldn’t finish at the rim,” Hall said. “At halftime we adjusted and the girls accepted the challenge. We performed a lot better in the second half and were executing what we wanted to do,” Hall said. “We’re going to use the next couple of days to get in better shape and be ready for Friday and Saturday,” Hall said.
