Colts top Coyotes in season opener

Colt varsity basketball won their season-opener at home against Tatum, 79-51.

NMMI outscored the Coyotes in every period and played impressive defense in the first half, giving up just 16 points to take a 19-point lead into the locker room, 35-16.

Four players for the Colts posted double-digits in points, led by junior center Vinicius Diaz with 19; senior shooting guard Tyler Colburn and freshman wing Ben Parks each had 16; while senior foward Killian Hernandez-Hindi dropped in 12 off the bench.

NMMI's junior point guard Kamil Naime was the assists leader with four, trailed closely by another junior PG, Pacen Phillips with three. Naime also topped the Colt squad in steals with three.

Diaz got the double-double with 18 boards in the afternoon match, helping the Colts outrebound the Coyotes 56-27.

With the win, NMMI moves to 1-0 on the season.

The Colts next game won't be until Dec. 4-6 - they'll head to Truth or Consequences for a three-game tournament at Hots Springs High School.
