On Tuesday night New Mexico Military Institute improved to 2-1 in district play with a 77-35 win over Dexter High School at the Cahoon Armory Gym. The Colts improved to 14-7 overall while Dexter dipped to 1-2 in district play with a 12-9 overall record.
Q1
From the opening tip, the Colts set the tone with fast-paced offense and strong defensive pressure, building an early 23-6 lead after the first eight minutes. The first quarter was highlighted by Tyler Colburn, who scored 11 first-quarter points. Three of his made field goals came from behind the three-point line to help set the tone for the remainder of the contest. Six different players scored in the opening quarter for the Colts as they only allowed six first-quarter points.
Q2
With a double-digit lead after one, the Colts outscored Dexter 15-8 in the next eight minutes. Pacen Phillips and Ben Parks each drilled a three pointer to help grow the NMMI lead. Parks scored a quarter-high five points to lead all players. The team moved the ball efficiently, capitalized on turnovers, and controlled the tempo on both ends of the floor throughout the first half. By halftime, the Colts had created a comfortable 38-14 cushion.
Q3
In the third quarter, Manny Calderon found another gear for Dexter as he scored nine points as he led all scorers in the period for both teams. However, the Colts continued at their own tempo as they outscored Dexter 22-13 in the period. Mihail Parada led the Colts with seven third-quarter points with the help of a shot from deep to add to his total. Vinicius Diaz contributed a three in the final play of the quarter as he beat the buzzer to extend the NMMI lead.
Q4
In the final eight minutes of the game the Colts kept their foot on their gas and did not look back. NMMI outscored Dexter 17-6 in the final quarter. For Dexter, CJ Granados and Mathias Salas each drilled a three for the visitors to make up their six points. Tyler Colburn knocked down two three pointers while Mihail Parada added another three as the Colts secured the 77-35 blowout win. NMMI went 10-for-19 from the three-point line for the game and allowed just 13 made field goals by Dexter.
