On Friday night New Mexico Military Institute suffered a 8-6 in the night cap of the 32nd annual Sertoma Colt Classic. With the loss, the Colts moved to 3-6. With the win, the Horsemen improved to 8-3 on the year.
The game began as a defensive struggle until the second inning, when both offenses found their rhythm. The Horsemen struck first in the top of the second when T. Trujillo walked, stole third, and crossed the plate on a throwing error. NMMI answered immediately in the bottom half; after Juan Carlos Hurtado and Connor Kent reached on singles, Caden Carter was hit by a pitch to tie the game. Nicolas Barcelo then drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to right field, giving the Colts a 2-1 lead.
The lead traded hands again in the third. St. Michael’s C. Chavez ignited the rally with a triple, scoring on an error, while M. Giesler added a sacrifice fly to put the Horsemen back on top, 3-2. NMMI refused to back down, as Konstantino Scopelitis delivered a clutch RBI triple to tie the game before eventually stealing home to reclaim a 5-3 lead for the Colts.
The definitive blow came in the top of the fourth. Exploiting a combination of hit batters, walks, and a costly balk, St. Michael’s surged for four runs. J. Lewandowski drew a bases-loaded walk and Trujillo reached on an error to fuel the rally, giving the Horsemen a 7-5 cushion. Although NMMI clawed back a run on a passed ball in the bottom of the fourth, A. Bird took over on the mound in the fifth and sixth to silence the Colts’ bats.
St. Michael’s added an insurance run in the fifth via a bases-loaded walk by R. Watson. From there, the Horsemen defense locked down, retiring the final six NMMI batters in order to clinch the 8-6 win.
