The eighth-seeded NMMI Colts will head to Albuquerque, NM for the quarterfinal round of the New Mexico Activities Association’s Class 3A State Baseball Championships to take on the top-seeded East Mountain Timberwolves, with the first pitch scheduled for 3:30 pm on Thursday, May 14 at Field #3 in the Jennifer Riordan Spark Kindness Sports Complex.

The Colts are the defending state champions with eight seniors on this year’s team. NMMI comes into the quarterfinals with a 13-15 overall record and a four-game winning streak, including a pair of wins to advance in the first round of the playoffs against ninth-seeded Tohatchi.

The Timberwolves have 25 wins on the season and just one loss (7-4 at Rio Grande HS on March 14). Their No. 1 seed gave them a first-round bye.

NMMI and East Mountain have played three times in the regular season due to district play, with the T-wolves winning all three:

  • 10-0 on April 7 at NMMI
  • 5-0 on April 24 at East Mountain
  • 8-3 on April 24 at East Mountain

The Colts hope that the fourth time will be the charm and will likely start junior ace Juan Carlos Hurtado on the mound. Hurtado leads NMMI in total innings pitched, and boasts a 4-1 record on the season with a 2.62 ERA.

NMMI will also need the bats to stay hot, especially those of their top-hitting seniors:

  • Makihi Phillips tops the team in batting average at .382
  • Konstantino Scopelitis leads the Colts in hits (30) and home runs (3) and has the second-best batting average on the squad (.357)
  • Grant Maloney is hitting .355 and leads NMMI in RBIs (20), runs scored (30), doubles (6) and triples (5)

Three other seniors are the keys the Colt defense, each with just three errors despite 28 games played:

  • Nicolas Barcelo behind the plate, with a strong arm and great blocking ability
  • Michael Ortega at second base anchoring the middle infield with quick hands and a great glove
  • Caden Carter’s solid range and vision in the outfield

The winner of Thursday’s single-elimination game advances to the semifinal round and will play again on Friday, May 15 at 4 pm.
