On Saturday evening, New Mexico Military Institute opened conference play 2-0 with a 14-1 win in game one, followed by a 22-7 win in game two. With the pair of wins the Colts improved to 8-5 overall on the year. On the other hand, the Bobcats dip to 0-4 to start off the year.
GAME 1
To open the game, the Colts scored six runs in the opening inning with the help of four walks and an error. In the bottom of the third inning, Tegin Maloney hit an inside the park home run to put the Colts ahead 7-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Colt offense exploded as they scored seven runs to take a 14-0 lead. In the top of the fifth inning, Bosque was able to score a run but it wasn’t as the Colts took game one 14-1 after five innings.
GAME 2
Bosque landed the first punch as they opened game two by scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning with the help of five walks and an error. However, the Colts would respond with eight runs in the bottom half.
Javier Yepiz opened with a leadoff double, and the Colts later scored three runs with the help of a triple by Grant Maloney. In the next at bat, Nicolas Barcelo picked up an RBI double to make it a 7-4 ball game. The inning was capped by another triple, this time by Caden Carter who put the Colts back in the lead, 8-7. Again in the bottom of the second inning, the Colts erupted for another eight runs. NMMI was aided by six walks in the inning as they took a 16-7 lead after two innings.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Colts scored another six runs as the game was called after an inside the park homer by Tegin Maloney as NMMI jumped out in front 22-7, forcing the game to be called with one out in the bottom of the third inning.
The Colts return to action on Tuesday, April 1 as they host Sandia Prep at 4 p.m. at the NMMI Ballpark.
