On Friday evening New Mexico Military Institute hosted undefeated Dexter High, suffering a 38-0 loss. With the setback, the Colts dip to 4-2 on the year while holding a 2-1 overall mark in district play.
Q1
After a 30 minute delay, both teams started the game with a punt after their first offensive possession as both teams totaled for -16 yards. With just three minutes off the clock, Dexter took their second offensive possession for 80 yards in just seven plays as Cj Granados connected with Diego Munoz from 25 yards out for a touchdown pass. Following a successful two-point attempt Dexter took an 8-0 lead.
Q2
The Colts struggled to find any rhythm as they were forced to punt on three consecutive possessions to open the second quarter. With their first chance with the ball in the second period, Dexter took an early 14-0 lead after a 31-yard quarterback scramble by Granados before failing their second two-point attempt.
After just five total yards by the NMMI offense on the next possession Dexter High took over with good field possession at the 50 yard line. Using just one play, Granados connected with wide receiver Kaesn George for his second passing touchdown of the night to give Dexter a 22-0 heading into halftime.
Q3
To open the second-half, Dexter High surprised the Colts with an onside kick attempt that was successfully recovered at the NMMI 32 yard line. Running a total of three minutes off the clock, the visiting team used six plays and a 5-yard rush by George to give the visiting team a 30-0 lead after a successful two-point conversion.
Q4
As the NMMI offense continued to struggle, Dexter used their second possession of the quarter to drive the ball 45 yards in four plays, capped by a 32-yard touchdown connection from Granados to Issac Ramirez to give the away side a 38-0 lead after a successful two-point conversion.
Despite the loss, Head Coach John O’Mera was able to find some positives from the team's performance. “That’s a really good football team and they outplayed us tonight … however now we know what we need to do to be successful,” O’Mera said.
The Colts return to action next Thursday, Oct. 10 as they travel to El Paso, TX for a 6 pm matchup with Cathedral High.
