Colts leave Socorro with 41-0 shutout win Friday night

On Friday night New Mexico Military Institute defeated Socorro High School in shutout fashion, 41-0. With the win the Colts improve to 1-1 in district play with a 2-3 overall record. With the loss, Socorro falls to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in district play.

Q1

The Colts jumped on the Warriors from the kickoff, Aquaylis Jordan took the opening kickoff 91 yards to the house to give NMMI a quick 7-0 lead. On defense, the Colts forced a quick turnover on downs after a failed fourth down attempt by Socorro in NMMI territory.

On the next drive, the Colts used seven plays to move the ball 80 yards. The three-minute drive was capped off by a 14-yard rushing touchdown by Konstantino Scopelitis to put NMMI ahead 14-0 after a successful extra-point attempt with 6:30 remaining in the first.

Q2

After holding the Colts scoreless the remainder of the first quarter, NMMI opened the second quarter with a touchdown drive. In a seven-play drive, Aquaylis Jordan tallied three consecutive carries before finding the end zone with a 4-yard rush to give the visitors a 21-0 advantage. The Colts got the ball back on the next possession after Miguel Garcia came up with an interception to set the Colt offense up.

In just one play, Luke Tomasists connected with Konstantino Scopelitis from 44 yards out to put NMMI in the driver’s seat 28-0, with 9:40 remaining in the quarter. The Colts held strong after allowing a 15-play drive but stopped the Warriors at the goal line for a turnover.

Like the last drive the Colts used one play, a 93-yard rushing touchdown by Aquaylis Jordan, to take a commanding 35-0 lead at the half.

Q3

The second half started with a long, scoreless 5-minute drive by the Socorro offense. In that time, NMMI allowed just 22 yards in eight plays before forcing another turnover on downs.

The Colts immediately answered with a 22-yard rushing touchdown by Aquaylis Jordan, as the Colts made it a 41-0 ball game with 5:05 remaining in the quarter.

Q4

Up by 41 points, NMMI held Socorro scoreless in the final period. As the clock winded down, the Colts were content with running the clock out with a 7-minute drive that resulted in a punt. Socorro attempted to move the ball down field but the Colts were not having any of it.

The Colts limited Socorro to just 111 yards of total offense with -2 rushing yards.  Aquaylis Jordan led the way for NMMI with 242 yards through the ground to go along with a trio of touchdowns.

Head Coach John O’Mera on the win, “we had a great week of practice, that’s the first thing. We practiced hard and went out with a purpose. We have to be ready to play no matter what and the kids did that tonight, we executed in all areas of the game,” O’Mera said. “We finally played to our potential and now we have to use that momentum and get back to work for next week.” Allowing no yards through the ground O’Mera was pleased with his defense, “we got better this week on it shows our here tonight with a shutout win,” O’Mera said.

The Colts return to action on Friday, October 3 as they host Hatch Valley High School at Colt Field, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
