Colts outlasted by Hot Springs High School 21-16

On Friday night, New Mexico Military Institute opened district play with a 21-16 loss against Hot Springs High School at Colt Field. With the loss, NMMI dips to 1-3 overall with a 0-1 start to district play. With the win, Hot Springs improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in district play.

Q1

After a failed fourth-down attempt by both offenses on their opening drive, NMMI used their second possession to take a 7-0 lead. In just two plays, the Colts moved the ball 48 yards, capped off by a 40-yard rushing touchdown by Aquaylis Jordan.

Q2

Up 7-0, the Colts used an 11-play, 70-yard drive to open the quarter and take a 10-0 lead after a 22-yard field goal attempt by Henrique Barreto was drilled. The first half would end 10-0 as the Colts held the Tigers scoreless through the first 24 minutes of action.

Q3

The Tigers opened the second half with a quick four and out to give the ball right back to NMMI. Up 10-0, the Colts conducted a 17 play drive to cover 77 yards. The drive was capped off by a 4-yard passing touchdown from Luke Tomasits to Grant Maloney to give NMMI a 16-0 lead, after the extra point attempt failed.

Q4

In the final quarter, the Colts gave up 21 points as Hot Springs took a 21-16 lead with a 29-yard touchdown pass by Zaiden Baker to Evan Aguirre with less than a minute left on the clock. NMMI attempted to score but went four and out as Hot Springs kneeled the ball, then ran out the clock and secured the 21-16 win.
