On Friday night, New Mexico Military Institute made the trip to Bayard, NM for a district matchup against Cobre High School. The Colts came out on top 42-0, improving to an overall mark of 4-1 while opening district play a perfect 2-0.
Q1
On the very first play of the game, the Colts handed the ball off to Konstantino Scopelitis who blasted through the line and outran the entire defense for a 67-yard rushing touchdown. With just 23 seconds off the clock, Cobre ran two plays before Matthew Cao picked off a pass attempt and gave NMMI the ball at the Cobre 16 yardline.
On the very next play, Cole Seidenberger kept the handoff and took it himself for a 16-yard touchdown rush to give the Colts a 14-0 lead. After the defense forced a Cobre three and out, NMMI took over at their own 42. Moving the ball 58 yards in just five plays, Siendenberger capped off the drive with a three yard rush for his second of the night.
With a minute remaining in the quarter, Siedenberger took a punt all the way back for a 49-yard return to give the Colts a 35-0 lead.
Q2
On the second defensive possession of the quarter, Yong Jin Bessell forced a fumble to get the offense back on the field. With the ball on the NMMI 40, the offense went back to work. Driving the ball 60 yards in just five plays, the Colts punched in another touchdown behind a four yard rush by Julian Butler to extend the NMMI lead to 42.
Q3
Coming out of halftime, Cobre fumbled the ball on the third play of the quarter as Miguel Garcia jumped on the ball to secure another Colt takeaway. On the next drive, the Colts Coughed up a ball and gave possession back to the home team. Cobre controlled the time of pession in the third quarter holding the ball for over nine minutes but were held scoreless.
Q4
In the final quarter, both teams saw the ball just once as Cobre held possession for seven minutes after NMMI opened the quarter using the first five minutes.
In four total wins this season, the Colts have not allowed a single point outscoring opponents 162-0 in the process. On defense, the Colts only allowed 81 total yards off of 41 offensive plays run by Cobre High.
On offense, NMMI tallied a total of 266 yards picking up 24 of those through the air. The Colts averaged 9.9 yards per play, nearly completing a first down every time the ball was snapped on offense.
The Colts return to action next Friday, Oct. 4 as they host district opponent Dexter HighSchool at 7 p.m. on Colt Field.
