Day 1 of the 25th Annual Roswell Sertoma Colt Classic is complete, with the NMMI Colts moving on in the winner’s bracket.
The Colts defeated the Hatch Valley Bears 10-0 in the nightcap of the tournament, earning the mercy-rule win via a walk-off balk.
The other teams moving on in the winner’s bracket are the Texico Wolverines, the Shiprock Chieftains, and the Capitan Tigers. The Wolverines will play the Chieftains at 3:30 PM and the Colts will play the Tigers at 6:30 PM.
In the consolation bracket, tomorrow’s games will be: Dexter vs. Santa Rosa at 10:00 AM, followed by Tularosa vs. Hatch Valley at 12:45 PM.
Head Colt coach Charlie Ward was excited about the hot bats the Colts have been swinging this early in the season, and also with the pitching performance of sophomore Oscar Gomez.
“The kids are hitting the ball hard like they did during the Hal Bogle Tournament,” said the coach. “I tell them to hit the ball hard and the rest will take care of itself. We were also very pleased with Oscar. He pounded the zone and kept his pitch count under 60. That could be a big plus for Saturday’s tournament game.”
“Our main goal right now is to win the tournament,” continued Ward. “We have been in it the last couple of years, but Texico has beaten us. We have Capitan to worry about tomorrow. We both have good arms, so it should be a good game. “
