New Mexico Military Institute earned its first win of the year as they knocked off Hondo Valley 50-26 Thursday night. Playing their third game at the Godfrey Athletic Center, NMMI improves to 1-4 on the young season. With the loss, the Eagles stumble to 7-5.
Q1
In the opening period, the Lady Colts took the early lead behind a five-point quarter by Kaytlyn Lackey as she knocked down a pair of buckets. In the first eight minutes of action, NMMI allowed just five points, highlighted by a three by Hondo’s Kenya Fernandez. The first quarter ended with a 9-5 advantage for the Lady Colts.
Q2
With a four-point lead Neveah Clark came to live in the second quarter for NMMI. In the period the Lady Colts tallied 17 total points. Clark knocked down a pair of threes with a layup to score eight of the 17 points in the quarter. Adding to the mix, Siany McGhan and Ezebelle Gomez each also knocked down a triple to help the cause. Similar to the first eight minutes, the NMMI defense only allowed six points as they headed into half with a 26-11 lead.
Q3
Continuing their momentum from the opening half, the Lady Colts looked to be in the driver’s seat the remainder of the game. With a 15-point lead NMMI was able to hold Hondo Valley to just five total points in the quarter as they used the eight minute period to construct a 15-5 run. Jaydn Wade and McGhan each scored four points in the quarter to help extend the NMMI lead. Following 24 minutes of action the Lady Colts headed into the final quarter with a 41-18 advantage.
Q4
In the final quarter, Hondo Valley found some offensive rhythm as they tallied eight points – the most in any quarter of the game. Spreading the ball in last eight minutes of competition, six different scorers scored for the Lady Colts. For the Eagles, Isabella scored six points in the final quarter but it wasn’t enough as NMMI earned the 50-26 victory.
With their first win of the season Head Coach Lawrence Hall was pleased to get the win, “the first win of the season always feels good,” Hall said. Despite the 20-plus point win, Hall had this to say about the team’s performance, “there was just times there was lulling and we have to find ways to stay consistent throughout the full 32 minutes,” Hall said.
The Lady Colts will be back on the court tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 24 as they travel to Hatch, NM to take on Hatch Valley at 5:30 p.m. MST.
